Many years ago, I was on Sarathan Records. It was a midsize indie label out of Seattle, distributed by Fontana, in turn, part of The Universal Music Group. The band and I had played several shows in New York connected to The CMJ Music Festival. After our official showcase, I took several people to my favorite dive bar on the Lower East Side, and after a few shots of Jaeger, and because the showcase had gone well, I (fortified with liquid courage) walked out of the bar and called the label owner. We talked about doing a new record in the not distant future. He agreed it was a good idea, and it was on. It was a JOURNEY. Some of the best musicians I’ve ever worked with played on the record. When it was finished, I sent the album to the label and waited…
And waited… And waited…
Ultimately, the label owner wasn’t happy. After another round of re-recording, re-mixing, and re-mastering, I sent it off again. And waited some more. Eventually, the label got back to me. They didn’t want to release it. On the bright side, I got my album without having buy it back(and this never happens in the music industry).
But what to do with it?
I’ve been sitting on it for a while, and now that I’ve been making plans to record a new (independently funded) album, I’m pondering releasing them together. But before that happens, I’ll be releasing a song every month(or so) on this site, along with a “fun” tour or studio story.
I hope you enjoy!
